We're running into issue with rebuilding indexes on a webfarm with shared disk and the 2nd node isn't picking up the index rebuild. Does the index get loaded into memory? I hadn't assumed that it did, but I've been able to confirm that, when a product is updated, the settings don't get updated on the node that didn't build the index. If I kick off the index rebuild on the other node, then the changes take affect immediately. I assume that means that there is some level of caching of the index files.
We're using the load balancing module. Assuming that's the issue, is it possible to have the load balancing module clear the cache after the index rebuilds?
