Product categories with shared fields

Hi,

I have been having an issue in several products where I need to have multiple product categories, but some of them shared the same fields. The problem in the end is that I need to create duplicate fields, one for each product category.

I would love to have a way to set fields and assign them to product categories. A simple matrix of checkboxes would easilly set FieldA to Product Categories X and Z but not Y. In the interface the values would have to be duplicated in case a product belonged to groups that have both Prod Categories X and Z.

Best Regards,

Hi Nuno,

Would it help to move the shared categories to their own category and then assign those to another group to which you add the products? That way you can have fields coming from multiple groups: the abse group and the specific group.

Hi Imar,

I understand your idea, but sometimes it's still not good enough. Take the attachment for example. This was provided by the customer and we had to replicate it in Dynamicweb. Finding the exact match for the common fields would mean creating almost 1 product category per field, 1 ecom group for each product category, and assign products to the specific groups, but that would be a mess to manage.

We ended up creating just the necessary product categories and duplicating the fields. This is true for more projects than just this one.

Ah, I see. That makes a lot of sense. I like your idea of a matrix so you can choose existing fields to be included easily.

And if categories are overahauled anyway, a group box per field (like with items) would be great too so you can group them in the UI ;-)

Hi Imar,

Yep, I think so too. Hopefully it will be possible :)
