Wanted: ideas and suggestions for an upcoming book on Dynamicweb eCommerce 8

Reply
Hi there,

As some of you already know, I am working on an eBook called Dynamicweb eCommerce 8 that shows you how to build a complete eCommerce web site from scratch using out-of-the-box functionality and the Extensibility API in Dynamicweb eCommerce 8.

Current, I have a Table of Contents for the book that spans 20 chapters and a few appendices. You can view the TOC in the attachment to this post (up to level 2; the actual TOC has more details).

If you have ideas for the book you want me to include, please take a look at the TOC and let me know if there's something you would like to add or change.

The book is still a work in progress so there's still room and time for changes to include topics you want me to discuss.

You can post your ideas here, or e-mail me directly.

Thanks,

Imar

TOC in a separate post. For some reason, you can't add attachments to the initial post here. How useful.... ;-)

Hi Imar,

There's something worth while mentioning, altough it's a current limitation of eCommerce (if posted it as a feature request a long time ago, but seems to be forgotten).
Configuring countries is not enough. We need regions because we have different VAT for the mainland, Madeira and Azores. A similar thing happens in Brasil because they work by states. We had to use un-used countries in those solutions. If you know a better wat to do it, put it in the book :P

Could be useful to approach childGroups and breadcrumb with eCommerce. Also adding more than 1 product at a time and more than 1 quantity at a time

You are not mentioning Components, Product ratings and comments, and might also be good to point out details like if a product is set as a service, even if it has a weight, will not count for shipping

In terms of shopping cart, talking about custom orderline fields and custom cart fields is also important in my opinion.

Hi Nuno,

Thanks for your suggestions.

>> If you know a better wat to do it, put it in the book :P

Nope. Sorry....

>> Could be useful to approach childGroups and breadcrumb with eCommerce.
>> Also adding more than 1 product at a time and more than 1 quantity at a time

Yep, good suggestions. ChildGroups are already there, but I'll add the rest.

>> You are not mentioning Components, Product ratings and comments

Omission in the TOC. These are discussed in Chapter 4 = Product Catalog.

>> In terms of shopping cart, talking about custom orderline fields and custom cart fields is also important in my opinion.

Yep. There are discussed in Chapter 7 - Shopping Cart v2 extensively. It's a late breaking item I just added a few days ago so they weren't added to the ToC yet.

Kind regards,

Imar

From a shop owners point of interest I could image:

Google A/B Split testing
Powerpack "in use"
Stock
Shipping and units
Integration to shipping solutions (DHL, PostDanmark ie).
Use of custom fields (product card) (the versatile system)
B2B setup, how to make a B2B shop with discounts
Social Media integration

Maybe an "integration cook book" for project managers.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your suggestions:

>> From a shop owners point of interest I could image:
The book is targeted more at eCommerce developers than at shop owners.

>>Google A/B Split testing
Outside of the scope of the book. Fits better in a general Dynamicweb CMS book.

>>Powerpack "in use"
Yep, we got that covered (Comments, Ratings, extensive Search)

>> Stock / Shipping and units
Covered most of that. Shipping is discussed just briefly. From a standard functionality point of view there's not much to discuss is there?

>> Integration to shipping solutions (DHL, PostDanmark ie).
Considering this, but I think it's too specific and only targeting one solution / company / country

>> Use of custom fields (product card) (the versatile system)
Yep, got that covered.

>> B2B setup, how to make a B2B shop with discounts
I am not showing a complete B2B setup, but I do show how to implement discounts, how you can use them and how they behave.

>> Social Media integration
What would you like to see? Can you elaborate?

>> Maybe an "integration cook book" for project managers.
Can you elaborate? It sounds like it's outside the scope of this book (and could be its own book) , but I am not 100% sure.

Cheers,

Imar

Hi Imar.

AB: I think you are wrong. A/B Split is essential for e-shops. Some owners base 99% of their features on the site on ABSplits. And I know that if its mentioned, it will create a buzz.
All the clients I have met have asked for ABsplits as a part of a eshop system.

Ship solution:
You might just mention the fact that it can be done. Not all readers are programmers.

Social media:
Facebook meta tags are very easy to implement into DW, it must be mentioned, its a plus. you could just show how to implement a "like box" correctly with the correct product picture, would be a buzz for many people.
Also RSS feeds for smartphones and blogs.

Integration:
Not just for programmers, also for project managers, to show the versatility of the system.
A list of things they can consider when they are starting an integration project. And why to climb the ladder up to an ERP, leaving the ecom.

Maybe the stuff I mention are not programmers delight. But many readers are project managers also.
There are also many people who own the shops themselves and just like to know what the system are capable of.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your feedback and ideas. Much appreciated.

>> the book looks fantastic. I look forward to read it !!
Thank you!

>> AB: I think you are wrong.
I see your point. Will add it to the TOC.

>> Ship solution: You might just mention the fact that it can be done. Not all readers are programmers.
Yep, already did that.

>> Social media:
Yes, I'll mention stuff like Like boxes and show how to add them. Good suggestion. However, for the most part this isn't really Dynamicweb specific. So, while I think it has a place (and thus gets discussed), I don't think it needs a lot of focus in this book.

>> Integration:
I see your point, and I agree it would be useful to have information on this somehow. However, I don't think this book is the best place for that. Its core audience are eCommerce developers, frontend and backend, not project managers. At the same time, I don't want to go too deep into the API for integration. I think for both audiences, separate books, or at least extensive information on the Dynamicweb site would be more appropriate. I just don't want to serve 734 different audiences with a 2,700 page book..... ;-)

Kind regards,

Imar
