Customized urls: replace spaces with underscore not working as expected

Hey,

I just activated the URL formatting "Replace spaces with underscores (_)". Since the formatting was "None" before, I figured this wouldn't affect existing links to the website from Google etc.

I expected "http://www.mywebsite.com/some%20page"  to translate into "http://www.mywebsite.com/some_page" and any old links would still work. However, the one with %20 yields a 404 now. The same goes for normalizing latin characters.

Is there anyway to help this without creating direct paths? The website uses customized URLs.
