Send welcome email to new users (Imported or not)

Hi guys,

This is a recurring subject in this community and I wanted to check out if there are any significant changes on the topic.

I have the standard problem that a lot of other users have asked or commented about: "I want to send a welcome email to new users". In my case, to imported users but that may be irrelevant.

The password part is clear. We cannot/should not send passwords in cleartext. Instead, we should send a link to the Reset Password functionality. I have seen a few valid suggestions on this community already, I am not particularly happy that we always have to customize this part but at least there are options.

The part that troubles me is the decision to send via Email Marketing or User provider.

In my case, the solution is B2B and B2C but it's not using the built-in EmailMarketing. This means there is no point in buying an EmailMarketing license to cover the entire Users base (we have more than 40K users).

Having considered this, we are left out with 3 options:
1. Use the UserProvider functionality, which lacks a decent way of previewing and testing the emails that are being sent (at least I am not aware of any news on this part lately)
2. Create a custom Recipient provider that would allow sending the welcome emails to users that don't have the email permissions checked.
3. Use a notification to send out an email to new users (not particularly fond of this one)

I would be interested to know what would be the recommended approach for this functionality and I am also interested to understand if there are any plans for including a more straightforward approach for testing and sending out Welcome emails (preferably without forcing an EmailMarketing license extension).

Thank you,

Adrian
