Email Marketing - understanding links

Hi,

I am having a hard time reading through the code to understand a few things with Email Marketing:

  • Google Analytics tracking
It adds the prefix "linkparam_" to all parameters - how and where is it stripped out and/or enabling Google Analytics to track it? Marketers are confused by it (and so am I honestly)
Is there some documentation on it that I am not finding?

  • Aren't tracking providers supposed to be associated with every email link?
I looked at the table omclink where all links are stored and I cannot find the tracking params. Is that not implemented?

Best Regards,

Nuno Aguiar

Hi Nicolai,

Sure, please check the screencast https://www.screencast.com/t/SKD3sgbW8smZ

The values are set in Email Marketing under Tracking, as you'll likely know by heart.

linkparam_ part of the tag is removed when it reaches the link.ashx and before it goes to the website, making GA understand it.

I do not understand your second question.

Hi Nicolai,

Thanks for the confirmation that linkparam_ is dropped. I could not find the source code for link.ashx.

About the 2nd question, it's based on me not finding the source code as well. Consider the newsletter from the same screencast from above https://www.screencast.com/t/SKD3sgbW8smZ. It has several links:

  • Image (not loaded in the screendump)
  • "Register today" button
  • ...

Customers ask us to set (Google Analytics) tracking values per link. I was expecting we could do that through the engagement index, but it seems to not be tied to a tracking provider.

Does this make sense? Is there another way of doing this?

How does your markup look like around the links that does not get picked up?

Hi Nicolai,

So here's two of  the generated URLs

  • http://www.winnebago.com/link.ashx?id=1017&ref=480&linkparam_utm_source=dealer&linkparam_utm_medium=email&linkparam_utm_campaign=vpl&linkparam_utm_term=vpl&linkparam_utm_content=vpl_dealer_2_2020_09
  • http://www.winnebago.com/link.ashx?id=1006&ref=480&linkparam_utm_source=dealer&linkparam_utm_medium=email&linkparam_utm_campaign=vpl&linkparam_utm_term=vpl&linkparam_utm_content=vpl_dealer_2_2020_09
    https://www.screencast.com/t/vpuSufvG3V52

The redirect links are

This means that both links, despite going to different places, look the same for Google Analytics, because we cannot assign different tracking values per link.

Does that make sense?
