Just create a field of type "ItemTab". Int inserts another item type as a tab. You need to use another item type to create a tab.

Instead of doing a checkbox on the item, and simple styling?

I mean, this way you have to rebuild your item structure completely, "just" to get tabs.

No, you are right. But we also solves some other issues with large item types with this - and that is why it ended up being this solution.

A solution with "Tabs" in the same way as we have "Groups" of fields on the item type definition is probably a better approach for most scenarios.

Like this:

1. Tab
   1. Group
      1. Field 1
      2. Field 2
   2. Group 2
2. Tab 2
   1. etc...
