I cannot find anything in the documentation about search in datalists.

ok, agree that is not described.

When setting up the datalist, you set criterias - when clicking the little pencil icon you can setup a search term from i.e. querystring.

It is covered by the sentence - To use dynamic test values, you can use the pencil icon to set a session variables or request variables. In that way, you can use e.g. user or page IDs retrieved from the session or request to filter the data displayed in frontend. - but I agree that it could use an example. I will add one immediately.
