It is an untested change and you will most likely run into a few issues. But it should be easy to fix - In Rapido there is a method that will handle all product images, and you might need to change the internals of that a bit in order to get it totally right.

I have read that page twice and it is still unclear to me what "new tags" means.

You have a couple of references to new tags but I don't see any example of how the new tags look like.

Can you help me with that?
