Use product image urls from third party directly

Hi.

We have a request from a client to use urls from a third party image storage service directly to display images for products. We have a custom frontend so it's easy enough to store the urls in DW and display them on the ecommerce site. I am however wondering about product images in the Admin UI Products section. Is there a way to display those images (product list and overview / details) directly using a such a url?

Best regards, Jóhannes

Hi Johannes,

It may work if you store the absolute URL. But, obviously, you cannot manage the assets from the UI.

Yeah I just want the image to be displayed in the Admin UI, no need to manage the assets. I tried putting the absolute url in the EcomDetails DetailValue for the products image asset and in the ProductImageLarge, ProductImageMedium and ProductImageSmall Product columns but it won't show up in the Product list view. It does however show up as a thumbnail in the top bar on the Product overview screen. Any Ideas?

Hi Johannes,

ProductImageLarge, ProductImageMedium and ProductImageSmall are not used anymore.
It should be in the DetailValue in EcomDetails table.

I believe I remember that the GetImage logic does not support absolute Urls. Only local Urls. Maybe that's why it does not show up.
Dynamicweb team should pitch in on this topic. I believe there are situations where images would be served from CDN's or other storage systems and we may need support for absolute URLs.

Ok, thank you.

Yes I fell like this should be supported by DW since it's not an uncommon use case and especially recently we've had other clients showing interest in this kind of arrangement. It would fit into DWs best of breed policy, or whatever it's called :), as well.

Best Regards, Jóhannes
