PIM - Hidden Data-Model product group fields such as image and description

Hi there,

Its my understanding that a group entity, either, Warehouse, Ecom, data model group, data model and data set, are the same entity. The groupType defines what group it is.
The EcomGroup entity contains a name, number, description, all the columns in the EcomGroups table. Its possible to import data into these columns regardless of the groupType.

I tested this with an update query on a data model group and updated the description of the group. Its updated but not visible in the data model.

There is a difference in what group data you can see/edit per groupType, why? The groups in a Shop may have a description, image and logo, a data model may not.

The use case would be to save group images, logos, description to describe a data model. Exactly like a warehouse group in DW9.

Also, it is possible to select columns such as 'Image', via the Actions -> Manage fields, when editing a data model group. But this does not make it visible.

See screenshots below for examples:

I have an alternative, but I'm curious to why this decision is made.

Hi Barend,

To make it clean and simple in the Data Model area, we have decided to remove all group fields that are not needed in this area.

Do you have an example of why and where these fields in Data Model Group can be useful?

And what about Data Model and Data Set, would it be useful to have these fields there as well?

Hi Søren,

Ah I understand.

In general, deciding what information can be saved on a group entity based on the group type, seems limiting. Is it an idea to let the users/admins/developers decide what data is shown instead?

I can think about a question or situation where the PIM user wants to provide a data model or data model group a description. Just a brief overview of the group, just a like an Channel group, or warehouse group. Giving a data model an image is nice, but maybe the clients wants to provide the data model group (higher in the hierachy) with an image as wel, just for visualisation.

Also, when transitioning from DW9 to DW10, we usually think about transforming the warehouse to a data structure. The warehouse groups sometimes contain a description and/or image, this gets lost when converting it to a data structure.

I understand the decision (in case of SEO-descriptions, this is not needed for data models), but for generic group data, it is an unnecessary restriction.

Thanks!
