Search in image folder much slower in DW10 than DW9

We recently updated a client to DW10 from DW9. He's complaining that searching for images in the Assets section of the Admin UI is considerably slower than it was in DW9 and I've confirmed this to be true. The search is very slow when you navigate to a subfolder (Assets>Images/ProductImages) and search from there. The client keeps most of their product images in this folder and it contains around 200 thousand image files. It's quite large but in DW9 the search / list rendering is much faster.

Hi Jóhannes,

I've tried to replicate the issue locally, but I have been unable to.

Can you tell me which version you're running? Also, is it only with image files or is it an issue no matter which type of files as long as there are many of them? What specifically do you mean by "considerably slower"? How long are we talking for DW9 and DW9? Is the DW9 solution hosted in the same environment as the DW10 solution, and is it cloud or local?

I've generated 200K files in a single folder, all named ".jpg", but they aren't really images. When I access it locally, I don't experience a big slowdown. It takes me a couple of seconds to see the list. The same holds true for search.

Hi Jeppe.

  • The DW version is 10.18.8
  • The problematic folder (Assets>Images/ProductImages) contains only image files
  • The DW10 solution is hosted on the exact same environment as the DW9 one (same machine and server). The directory structure and naming is also the exact same as DW9. We just copied the Images folder from DW9 solution and then filesynced so metadata like created/modified should also be the same.
  • The service is hosted on-prem
  • In DW9 the search maybe takes a couple of seconds sometimes but effectively feels "instant". DW10 is alot slower. I recorded a video of me opening the ProductImages folder (called Vörumyndir) and searching for an image by filename. I'm searching for the first image in the list when you open the folder so it had just been rendered when I perform the search. The video should be attached to the post.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jóhannes,

I'm not seeing a slowdown from DW9 to DW10. In fact, it's the opposite for me.

Loading a list with 200K files takes ~15 seconds on my local DW9 (9.20.0) and ~4.5 seconds on my local DW10 (10.18.9). This is in the same environment, same machine, same disk and all of that.

In the upcoming Ring 0 (10.20.0), we've made changes to the Assets area. We've refactored how files and folders are found and introduced recursive search through a folder hierarchy. When I do the same lookup locally on that version, it takes ~1.2 seconds to load the same list.

The long and the short of it is, that I'm not able to replicate your findings, but we do have an incoming change that should alleviate some of what you're seeing.

Ok understood, thanks for the help. I'll relay the information about the new version to our client.
