Product Categories Field Translation

Hi

We have a client that are setting up fields for PIM enrichment. They are setting up Product Categories for adding these fields to specific groups in the PIM structure. They have several fields that are referenced by more than one group and for that, they are using the Reference type, and then referencing these fields from a Category type. Problem is, that they set up translations on the name on each field for each language in the reference group, but when they reference the field from a Category type these translation does not seem to be pulled over from the reference group, it will only take the translation of the main language.

An example of this could be the following. Assuming that the main language is english then we create a reference group "General" which have a field named "Color". In the reference group we translate the field so english name is "Color" and danish name is "Farve". When referencing this field from another category the translation for danish is not pulled over to the category field, so all languages will then once again have the name "Color" making it necessary to translate all field references over again.

This could seem like a small problem copying the values over, but client has 5 languages and 300+ references to create, making this a very time-consuming process. Question is, is this working as intended or could this be fixed in an upcoming version?

Another question from the for the setup of custom fields also because the client is setting up a lot of fields. Is it possible to change the default values of the checkboxes in "Field Settings" section in the image below, so all checkboxes is always unchecked when creating a new field?

Customer is running version 9.10.4

Hi Chris,

We actually have functionality for what you are describing however, I'm not 100% sure, that it's exactly what you are looking for.

You can actually take the translation information from the reference field to all the links by using the 'Force values to links'. This will take the information from the current language version of the reference field and force it onto the fields which reference this field. As far as I remember, it will also create language versions on the links, if they do not already exist.

Regarding the question about changing the default values of the two checkboxes inside 'Field Settings', it's currently not possible to change the default behavior of the checkboxes, and we don't have anything planned that implements something like that.

I hope that answers the questions.

Best regards,

Steffen

Hi Steffen

Yes using the "Force values to links" will actually copy the translation into the fields referencing it. Still it seems like a lengthy process because of the order you're creating the fields in. Process would then be:

1) Create all categories with type reference with reference fields and translate the fields on all languages

2) Create all product categories with type category with fields referencing the fields in the reference group

3) Go back through all category with type reference and on all fields, press the "Force values to link" button.

Is there any particular reason for the translations not to be copied as default onto the field when referencing it, if the translations are present on the reference?

Too bad with the default behaviour on checkboxes. I did believe so myself, that it was not supported, but it was worth giving a shot.

Hi Chris,

We have improved the use of ReferenceFields in DW9.10.5.

And there we have added a checkbox, where you can decide to get All translations on ReferenceField. (see below)

I hope that helps you
