I’m trying to figure out how DW works with product fields, and the groups / categories that push fields to products.
I just can’t get a clear overview of how it works and how to proceed.
For example, in Magento you have a attribute set, a set of numerous fields that describe the product. Like you have a product type of “Chairs” , which have several attributes connected to it (Like height, width, material, brand, type etc.). So when you make a new product, you select the attribute set you want to use, and then the product has only those attributes visible.
In DynamicWeb product categories are somewhat used as that. So you have the Product category “Wheels”, which has rim-height, type, weight attributes (fields).
I tried to do this for our own solution, so I created a product category called “basefield” (for test purposes), and added a brand field to it with a few options.
When creating a productgroup based on the category, this brand field does not automatically appear in the list. You’d have to go to ‘visible fields’ and first select it.
When I create a group, not based on the category, this brand field does not automatically appear in the list, as expected. But you can still go to go to ‘visible fields’ and first select it.
So whats the real use of creating the productcategories like that, except inheritance of values, if any product can have any field by default?
I hope I made my problem clear.
