Rapido Item Types

Rapido ships with a number of item types, which form a central part of the design:

  • Settings item types are used to configure the overall layout of the solution
  • Content item types are used for creating content with a dynamic composition
  • Article item types are used for creating fixed-format content
  • Newsletter item types are used for creating newsletter emails
  • Etc.

This article describes what each item type is designed to do, and how it interacts with the rest of Rapido.

The Website settings item type extends the basic website properties in Dynamicweb with a number of item fields for configuring the overall layout of a solution.

This works because the website settings are compiled to Less variables when saved, then bundled and compiled to perfect, clean and minified CSS, which is used by the Rapido project to change the website layout.

The result is that you can configure the overall website design using only the website settings

  • Layout width, center width and top layout & behavior – etc.
  • Logos and icons
  • Navigation styling & behavior
  • Content fonts, button styles, footer content, etc.
  • Various Ecommerce layouts
  • Etc.

This means that Rapido is very configurable, and a perfect starting point for projects where the requirements are more or less “standard”.

Tip: For non-standard projects, you can use the Ignite CSS project to keep all your custom, single-solution styles in one place.

The Page item type contains a couple of fields extending the default page properties

The current release features only two:

  • A checkbox for enabling a left menu
  • A checkbox for enabling a breadcrumb

The Article & List item types are made for content with a fixed format and layout – such as blog posts, news articles, course descriptions, and so forth.

  • The Lists are page items which only allow a certain type of article as children
  • The Articles are page items with item fields tailored to a particular purpose

So if your news articles or blog posts always have the same layout – article & list items are the way to go. If not, you should use the content items to create a more dynamic composition.

If you use Article items, use the Item Publisher to publish them – don’t use the details template, link directly from the list to the article instead.

The Paragraph item type is the basic item type for creating dynamic content – content which does not follow the same strict format as e.g. a newsletter or a case.

It allows you to add:

  • A title
  • An image
  • A text
  • Two buttons

You can also control content width on large and small devices, the relative position of the content, and the image style and crop. Using the Image filter section, you can add a filter to the image, and with the Other section, you can choose to show the content in a card-frame, to hide outer padding (around the paragraph) and change the inner padding (between content and edge inside the paragraph).

The paragraph container item type contains a collection of paragraphs and associated settings, and is a useful way of grouping your content and applying configurations to the whole group:

  • The content width and height
  • The background color and font color
  • The background image
  • The spacing between paragraph containers
  • A separation line after the container
  • The alignment for the paragraphs (left or centered, where left is default)
  • Image filters
  • The Carousel effect
  • Video background

Of course, it also makes it easy to move a group up and down on the paragraph list, compared to moving a long list of paragraphs.

The paragraph and paragraph container items combined constitute a very flexible way of working with content, so there should be no real need for creating other content item types.

The Overlay item type allows you to create notification overlays for promotion. This tool is useful for getting conversions or leads when a user enters the site, and for sales, events and highlighting a product.

The Maps item type is an easy way to create a Google Map with a marker to your content. You can enter an address to retrieve coordinates automatically – or select a location manually. You can also enter a title and some information which will be shown when the marker is clicked.

The Video item allows you to embed a video using iframes.

Both of these item types inherit layout settings from the Layout item type, which means that you have the same configuration options available as on paragraphs.

A couple of additional item types are available from the Shared folder in the item types overview. They are very simple, and all of them are used as extensions for the other item types:
