ProductNumber is cleared when Combining Products

Hello,

The ProductNumber of a product is cleared when Combining Products - is this needed?

We are doing daily batch product imports, and I need a way to identify products, even though they have been combined in the PIM and therefore have been assigned a new ProductId.

This could be the ProductNumber, if it wasn't wiped. Does this serve a purpose?

I will create a new ERP-ID field for the purpose of identifying in the import - but I feel it would be cleaner, if I could use the ProductNumber field.

Hi Søren,

It's not the intention to clear the ProductNumber of any other products than the MasterProduct when you initially create a family. 

Normally if you select multiple products from e.g. the ProductList and press 'Combine', you will select one of them as the master. What we then do is to create a copy of the product and make that the actual Master. This copy will then get its ProductNumber cleared. We don't touch any of the ProductNumbers on the children, because then it's impossible to identify the products from the ERP.

Can I ask what are your FieldSettings for the ProductNumber under Settings/Ecommerce/Advanced configuration/Fields? If you have set it to not allow edit in variants, it will automatically get the ProductNumber from the Master, which is in this case empty. This could explain this behavior.

Hi Steffen,

Okay - that makes sense. My ProductNumber was set to not being allowed to be changed across variants. Changing this, solved the problem.
